Technology may find ovarian cancer cells at an earlier stage

(Chicago Tribune) New technology for identifying early stage ovarian cancer in uterine and cervical cells could have the potential to one day stem this often deadly disease, according to a recent study in the International Journal of Cancer.

Using equipment that can carry out nanocytology ? a technique that identifies cells at the nanoscale, or one billionth of a meter, much smaller than typical microscopy can detect ? researchers were able to find ovarian cancerous cells that were invisible using a conventional microscope? If the findings are replicated on a larger scale, doctors could brush the cervix and endometrium for cells during a pap smear and only have to use costlier tests, such as a CT scan, to confirm a diagnosis, [Dr. Vadim] Backman said. Community: This is very good news, since most ovarian cancer isn?t found until it?s at a very late stage and hard to cure.

Medical school program opens new medical school, creates job opportunities

St. Louis, MO (I-Newswire) April 30, 2013 - Western Michigan University School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking Family Medicine faculty as well as an Osteopathic Family Medicine Program Director to join the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Western Michigan University is in the process of opening a new medical school in Kalamazoo, which will provide faculty members with the unique opportunity to be actively involved in the formation of a new school. Candidates will join a collegial, stable group that is passionate about teaching, but enjoys work / life balance as well.

The dually accredited (AOA and ACGME) WMed Family Medicine program recently increased from six to eight residents per year. It has expanded into a neighborhood Federally Qualified Health Center and developed an accredited Patient Centered Medical Home. ?We are committed to providing a quality educational experience for our residents and medical students,? says Allan Wilke, MD, MA, Founding Chair and Residency Program Director in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at WMed.

Western Michigan?s faculty is currently comprised of seven WMed faculty as well as twelve part-time community-based faculty members. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Cancer, disease and mud were no match for one Virginia Beach runner who crossed the finish line at the Dirty Girl Mud Run Saturday morning.

Jan Morrow fought off a rare blood disease and a cancerous lung tumor. And at one point, she had to give up running altogether.

But, Morrow is back on track, and feeling stronger than ever.

She shared her story with WAVY.com photojournalist Kenny Becker.

Tesla announces new service details, unconditional warranty for Model S battery

Tesla CEO Elon Musk talked a bit about his goals for expanded service options in his interview with us earlier this month, and he's today detailed some of those options that the company is ready to roll out. That includes one perk that's been mentioned previously: the ability to get a Model S loaner to tide you over when you have to turn your car in for service. What's more, that loaner will be a top-of-the-line Model S regardless of the car you turn in (there's a fleet of 85 to start with, each with valet service to your location), and customers in "most markets" can also opt to get a Tesla Roadster as a loaner if they'd prefer to try out something sportier. Musk further explains that customers can even choose to keep that loaner car if they like it better, and simply pay the difference.

Beyond that, Tesla is now making annual checkups entirely optional, meaning that your warranty will still be valid for the full term even if you never take your car in. And rounding things out is what Tesla describes as an "unconditional warranty" on Model S batteries, which will let owners get a factory reconditioned unit as a replacement even in the case of user error.
