Even before its opening on Saturday morning, hundreds of people, many with their kids in tow, were already waiting outside Megamall to be among the first to line up at Nestl? Philippines? sixth Nestl? Choose Wellness Expo on July 13 and 14, at Megatrade Halls 1 to 3 of SM Megamall B. The weekend event, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., aims to educate visitors on the importance of achieving wellness through a balance of good nutrition and physical activities.

?The?Nestl? Choose Wellness Expo has always been held in July in celebration of Nutrition Month. And as you?ve probably seen on your way to the venue, it?s become quite a habit among many families already for the past years. We?re also happy to note that visitors to the event are increasing annually,??Au Alipao, Vice-President,?Nestl? Corporate Communication told InterAksyon.com.

Judging from Saturday?s heavy turnout alone, organizers are expecting around 30,000 visitors over two days to take part in the fair?s interactive booths sponsored by?Nestl? brands such as Nescafe?Classic, Coffee-Mate, Nido, Milo, Bear Brand, Nestea, Maggi, Nestl??Low and Non Fat, Nestl??Fitnesse, Nestl??Fruit Selection Yogurt, and Nestl??Acti-V, to name a few.

?At the end of it all, besides going home with our much-coveted Nestl? umbrellas and other giveaways, the visitors should hopefully leave the venue feeling more conscious about taking the right foods and exercising regularly for good health,? added Ms. Alipao.

In a media conference held Saturday, Sandra Puno, Nestl? Philippines director of communications, said the Expo is consistent with ?the ?company?s ?mission of ?nurturing ?generations of Filipino families with products that promote Nutrition, ?Health ?and ?Wellness. ?With ?a ?heritage ?of ?good ?nutrition ?and ? unmatched scientific R and D network, Nestl? as the world Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company puts an emphasis on responding to the needs of consumers, in our support of the thrust towards healthy lifestyles by the Department of Health. One major health issue that we are now addressing as a priority is micronutrient deficiency, which is prevalent in the country.?

Ms. Puno added that the company has walked its talk since 2004 through various wellness activities, linking with wellness experts, and working with schools. In 2012, the company launched the Nestl? Wellness App with free downloadable services for nutrition, health, and wellness, including a Body Mass Index calculator and a Nutritional Risk Assessment feature.

Leslie Go-Alcantara, Corporate Wellness head of Nestl? Philippines, said research shows that many Filipinos from all walks of life have diet-related imbalances ranging from under-nutrition to over-nutrition, often without knowing it.

Ms. Alcantara said, ?Nestl? ?wants ?to ?emphasize ?a ?basic ?but ?important ?concept: moderation, variety, and balance are indispensable for a proper diet. So we have the Wellness plate as a simple?visual guide for a healthy diet. A balanced plate would be half-full with vegetables or fruits, one-fourth full with a carbohydrate source, and one-fourth full with a protein source.

?Diet ?fads ?are ?not ?balanced, ?because ?these ?do ?not ?contain the fuel, the food groups in the amounts that the body needs to stay healthy. We may lose weight from a fad diet in the short run, but it is not sustainable and there is eventually a rebound.?

Tips from Tweety and Coach Jim
Celebrity mom and entrepreneur Tweetie de Leon thanked Nestle for being ?a poster girl of sorts for wellness? as its brand ambassador. ?If you think I?m going to be preachy today, you?re dead wrong because I allow myself a lot of indulgences. If I?m going to have that cookie, boy, I?m going to have that cookie. I?ll have two, even three. But five? That?s overdoing it.

?If I?m going to eat pizza, I?ll have two, but three slices. But five? I?ll have to run more than five kilometers just to burn it all off and repent,? said the former model who looks fit and beautiful in her 40s.

Tweety even surmised that some people might cringe at the thought of eating pizza because they?re eliminated carbohydrates in their diet, which the Nestl? brand ambassador doesn?t believe in. ?I don?t adhere to diets, I don?t follow them. I?m relatively healthy. I?ll recommend it though if it?s for a medical reason. Why do I eat carbohydrates despite it being the culprit (for gaining weight or fat)? It?s because I?m active and carbohydrates are my source of strength. I?ve also found out that taking a reasonable amount of carbohydrates before an intense workout allows me to sustain my energy longer and perform much better.?

A reasonable amount of cargo before a game, she suggests would be to take two small pandesal breads with ?fillings and with feelings, because I enjoy it? Tweety said, lightening up the crowd.

She also advised taking the time to exercise regularly, ?But, if you really want to be fit and healthy, you got to do it. My workouts are sacred. No one or nothing goes in the way of my doing it. Treat it like a board meeting, if you will. You need to schedule it for yourself.?

The bottomline, she said is to find the balance. ?There is a key to all this, and it?s balance. Work and play, diet and exercise, crazy fun, sanity, alone time, me time, time with friends and family, it?s all about balance. But I?m not even going to tell you it?s easy and achievable because it can be elusive. You have to commit to a healthy lifestyle. And that, my friends, is my secret to feeling beautiful and enjoying happiness.?

Noted fitness coach Jim Saret, who is running the Nestl? FITFIL Boot Camp, one of the company?s ?Wellness ?activities, said that losing those unwanted pounds is all a matter of eating the right food, coupled with a regular exercise routine. ?Eat well, eat the right foods. There are a lot of fad diets right now but they?re only about calorie reduction.?

He also debunked the impression that getting fit comes with the high cost of a gym membership or a personal trainer. Anyone ?can ?get ?fit ? anywhere, ?anytime, ?without ?investing ?in ?clothes ?or ?equipment.

To prove his point, Coach Jim discussed a workout routine he often advises his clients to do when they?re too busy. And it?s all within four minutes and has been proven to burn 600 calories if done continuously.

? Catch the last day of the Nestl? Choose?Wellness Expo on Sunday, July 14, at the SM Megamall?s Megatrade Hall till 9 p.m.
