Window opens for North Korean rocket launch

The world is waiting to see if the launch will go forward.

Fighter jets roared through the skies over downtown Pyongyang on Thursday as the world watched to see whether North Korea would defy international warnings and launch a long-range rocket over the Yellow Sea.

The five-day window for the launch of a rocket mounted with an observation satellite opened Thursday as North Koreans woke to details about developments at a Workers' Party conference where leader Kim Jong Un ascended to top posts and brought with him a new generation of officials.

His father, Kim Jong Il, was granted the posthumous title of "eternal general secretary" at the special one-day party conference Wednesday. The immortalization of the late leader provided a glimpse into how North Korea will handle the nation's second hereditary succession and indicates he will be honored much in the same way his father, Kim Il Sung, was made "eternal president" following his 1994 death.

Footage on state TV Thursday showed Kim Jong Un seated at the front of the conference with white statues of his grandfather and a new statue of his father in his trademark khaki work ensemble, one arm on his hip.

There was no word Thursday morning on the timing of the controversial launch, which the North has said will take place sometime between Thursday and Monday. In 2009, a similar launch from an east coast site took place on the second day of a five-day window.

The United States, Japan, Britain and others say the launch would constitute a provocation and would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions banning North Korea from developing its nuclear and missile programs.

Experts say the Unha-3 carrier is similar to the type of rocket that could be used to fire a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead to strike the U.S. or other targets.

The launch and Kim's formal ascension to top posts comes during a week of events leading up to celebrations Sunday marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of his grandfather, late President Kim Il Sung.

The centennial is a major milestone in the nation Kim founded in 1948, and the streets of the capital, Pyongyang, were awash with new posters, banners and the national flag. The streets were busy with women clad in traditional Korean dresses and children waving red flags.

North Korea invited dozens of journalists to report on the events designed not only to honor Kim Il Sung but also to demonstrate unity as Kim Jong Un consolidates power. The Taedong River flyover of fighter jets was practice for a military parade, officials said. North Korea's army celebrates its 80th anniversary later this month.

The expected satellite launch is one of the marquee events this week. North Korean space officials call the launch of the Unha-3 rocket, mounted with an Earth observation satellite, a "gift" to Kim Il Sung. They said Wednesday that the final step of injecting fuel into the three-stage rocket was under way in the coastal hamlet of Tongchang-ri.

"We are injecting fuel as we speak," Paek Chang Ho, chief of the space committee's General Command Center, told reporters given a chance Wednesday to visit the control center outside Pyongyang.

He said the rocket was ready for liftoff as soon as engineers are given the green light. North Korea has informed international aviation, maritime and telecommunications authorities that the launch would take place between Thursday and Monday.

Because liquid rocket fuel is highly volatile and corrosive, its injection into the rocket is usually one of the final steps in the pre-launch process, experts say. But the weather, and particularly the wind, could force delays.

An analysis of recent satellite images shows preparations appear compete, the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies said.

Images taken by a commercial satellite earlier in the week revealed increased activity at an instrumentation site that would track and collect data from the rocket to be passed to the launch control center.

A mobile radar tracking antenna also was removed from its stowed position, indicating it has been checked out for operations. The analysis for the institute's website, 38 North, also says a mobile optical system appears to have been set up to track the rocket's flight.

The planned launch was a focus of discussions among foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialized democracies.

"I think we all share a strong interest in stability on the Korean peninsula, and we will be discussing how best to achieve that as well," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told her colleagues Wednesday in Washington.

Paek denied Wednesday that the launch was anything but a peaceful civilian bid to send a satellite into space. He said the Kwangmyongsong-3 satellite is designed to send back images and data that will be used for weather forecasts and agricultural surveys.

"Some parties insist our peaceful space program is a missile test," he told foreign reporters given an exclusive tour of the nation's main satellite command center. "We don't really care what the outside world thinks. This launch is critical to developing our space program and improving our economy."

This launch would be the country's third attempt since 1998. Two previous rockets, also named Unha, were mounted with experimental communications satellites and sent from the east coast.

"The launch of the Kwangmyongsong-3 satellite is the pride of our nation and of our people," Rim Kwang Myong, a mathematics major at Kim Il Sung University, told The Associated Press.

Science and technology also are said to be Kim Jong Un's areas of expertise, and Kim is credited with giving guidance during the last launch in 2009.

Kim is considered supreme commander of the armed forces, and is expected to gain other new titles formalizing his position as "supreme leader" of North Korea's people and party, possibly including his father's title of chairman of the National Defense Commission.

On Wednesday, he was made first secretary of the Workers' Party, a newly created post. He also succeeded his late father as chairman of the Central Military Commission, which formulates the party's military policies, and was elevated to standing member of the powerful Political Bureau, the party's highest-level decision-making body.

Party delegates also elected a new generation of younger officials to key posts, including Choe Ryong Hae, a new vice marshal who will join Kim on the powerful Presidium of the Central Committee's Political Bureau.

Six others were named to the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, including Jang Song Thaek, who is married to Kim Jong Il's sister, Kim Kyong Hui.

Galaxy acquire Lopes from Chivas for Cardozo

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles Galaxy have acquired defender David Junior Lopes from Chivas USA in a trade for midfielder Paolo Cardozo.

Southern California's two MLS clubs made the deal Tuesday.

The Galaxy hope to bolster their struggling defense with the addition of Lopes, a well-traveled Brazilian veteran who signed with Chivas last August and appeared in eight games. Lopes hasn't played for the Goats this season.

Cardozo was the Galaxy's first-round pick in the SuperDraft last year. He made regular appearances for Los Angeles last season, but has played in just one game this spring.

The Galaxy are the defending MLS champions and two-time winners of the Supporters' Shield, but they're off to a 1-3-0 start. They're in last place in the Western Conference despite their star-studded roster.

Answers to Your Google+ for Business Questions, Part 2 | Biznology

A couple-few weeks ago, I answered the first of many questions that the participants asked both during and after my recent webinar, Google+ for Business. Below are the next batch of questions and answers. I hope they answer your questions. And I have really enjoyed answering them.

Q: What are the benefits of selecting one type of category over the other?
Firstly, choosing the correct category allows Google to understand you better. When it comes to having a proper office with business hours, I am still undecided as to whether one should choose ?Local Business or Place? or ?Product or Brand? or ?Company, Institution, or Organization? except to consider scope.

If you serve donuts to your neighbors and don?t have a mail order business but do have a storefront, I believe you should choose ?Local Business or Place? because you?re able to go off and discover/find your own business based on its phone number; however, if you have a proper office with office hours and even local services but you do mail order or have clients in other cities, states, or countries, I would choose ?Company, Institution, or Organization.? My conundrum came twice on the last month: creating the Google+ pages for Miriam?s Kitchen and Naval Lodge No. 4. They?re both places with both addresses and hours, right? Well, I know that Miriam?s Kitchen is growing its mission to include ?ending chronic homelessness? and that mission is much greater than their kitchen, right?

So, if you?re a restaurant or store or do the majority of your business at a counter or a table or in person, you?re probably a local business or place. If you?re an office building company do office building work, you?re probably a company, institution, or organization ? World Wildlife Fund is an organization but the National Zoo is probably a local business or place.

A ?Produce or Brand? is simple: what do you sell and do you want that thing to have it?s own page? While Mizuno is a company, Mizuno Running coule be a product or a brand, and the Mizuno Wave Rider 15s are most certainly a product (and brand) ? and Potomac River Running is a local business or place, but with mutliple locations. So, what would PR Running do? Probably, if I had to choose, I would have a separate ?Local Business or Place? for each location and then I would choose ?Company, Institution, or Organization? for the corporate.

Q: What would a blog use for a category? If categories determine how you appear in search, how to determine what?s best?
I personally use ?Arts, Entertainment, or Sports? for my blog because I know what I am in the world of journalism: I am a court jester. At my best, At my worst, I am entertaining; at my best, I am an artist (and sometimes quite full of myself). But maybe Marketing Conversation is a product or brand. I would choose Entertainment but then again, go look around, sniff around the Category pull down menus, and see what fits best.

Q: Is there a benefit to selecting ?brand? over ?company? or ?local business?

The main reason why these categories exist is to explain what you are to the Bots and Spiders and Algorithms of Google. It it sort of working on the fact that you?re an elephant by touching your trunk, the roughness of your hide, the stoutness of your legs, the smoothness of your tusks, and the softness of your ears. Google tends to experience the Internet very much like the blind do. If you optimize your site for the vision-impaired, you?re good to go.

?Local business? is the only thing that a company should choose if you require people to come through your door and buy your stuff over a counter. If you have a cash register anywhere on site and if you physically handle credit cards and cash and have hours, the benefit to choosing local business is huge because creating a page for your physical business, associated with a phone number and address, will mean that you will automatically come up in anything Google that?s location-aware, be it mobile or web. If you?re Java Shack in Arlington and you create a Google+ page for your local business, plug in 703.527.9556, then your cafe should come up (hear me, Dale Roberts?). Then, once you take control of your proper page, then you and your content and your updates and your interactions, photos, videos, and copy will most likely trump the stuff that Googlebots have found through blindly scraping and triangulating and as well as the stuff that other people are saying about you (on Yelp, for instance, or FourSquare or whatnot).

This means you should protect your walls from flying debris when you do not plan to repaint them, and keeping floors and other fixtures covered when painting to ensure they do not get splattered with paint.

Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a popular photo-sharing app is worth far more: Facebook announced it is purchasing Instagram for $1 billion.

To put the sale in perspective, the Wall Street Journal's Dennis K. Berman tweeted: "Remember this day. 551-day-old Instagram is worth $1 billion. 116-year-old New York Times Co.: $967 million."

The purchase of the San Francisco-based photo-sharing app is the largest financial acquisition in Facebook's history and is being made in cash. The deal will be completed by June, according to the AP.

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users," CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."

In a move to reassure Instagram's growing audience of users, Facebook announced that it will continue to let Instagram operate independently. However, Facebook is hiring Instagram's 10 employees.

"We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience," Zuckerberg wrote. "We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook."

Wired reports the sale will yield huge earnings for Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom, along with the company's co-founder and several investments firms that have provided financial backing for Instagram. Systrom reportedly owns 40 percent of the company, meaning he will take home $400 million from the sale. Co-founder Mike Krieger will earn about $100 million from his 10 percent ownership share.
