Russian Cargo Ship Launches on Halloween Mission to Space Station

A robotic Russian cargo vessel blasted off today (Oct. 31), carrying nearly 3 tons of supplies on a Halloween delivery mission to the International Space Station.

The unmanned Progress 49 spacecraft launched from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome at 3:41 a.m. EDT (0741 GMT) today and is slated to arrive at the orbiting lab six hours later. You can watch the rendezvous and docking activities live here on NASA TV, beginning at 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT).

Progress 49 is toting 2.9 tons of supplies, including 2,050 pounds (930 kilograms) of propellant, 926 pounds (420 kg) of water, 62 pounds (28 kg) of oxygen and 2,738 pounds (1,242 kg) of spare parts, NASA officials said. There's no word yet on whether any candy corn or miniature chocolate bars made it onboard to help the space station's six astronauts celebrate the season.

Life on orbit is always busy, but this week is particularly jam-packed for station crew.

For example, today's launch comes just three days after SpaceX's unmanned Dragon capsule left the station, wrapping up the first-ever commercial cargo mission to the $100 billion orbiting complex. Dragon splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the Baja California coast on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28).

Dragon will make at least 11 more flights to the station under a $1.6 billion contract that California-based SpaceX signed with NASA. Its next launch is currently scheduled for January, agency officials have said.

Dragon is unique in its ability to ferry hardware, supplies and scientific experiments both to and from the space station. All other cargo craft currently operating ? including Russia's Progress ships ? carry supplies to the orbiting lab but burn up upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

Shortly after welcoming Progress 49 to the station, crewmembers will turn their attention to another task. NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, commander of the orbiting complex's current Expedition 33 mission, and Japanese colleague Akihiko Hoshide will perform a spacewalk Thursday morning (Nov. 1).

Beginning at 8:15 a.m. EDT (1215 GMT) Thursday, Williams and Hoshide will venture to the port side of the station's backbone-like truss to repair an ammonia leak in a radiator. The spacewalk should take about 6 1/2 hours, NASA officials said.

Stimulating brain cells with light

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Introducing a light-sensitive protein in transgenic nerve cells ... transplanting nerve cells into the brains of laboratory animals ... inserting an optic fibre in the brain and using it to light up the nerve cells and stimulate them into releasing more dopamine to combat Parkinson's disease. These things may sound like science fiction, but they are soon to become a reality in a research laboratory at Lund University in Sweden.

For the time being, this is basic research but the long term objective is to find new ways of treating Parkinson's disease. This increasingly common disease is caused by degeneration of the brain cells producing signal substance dopamine.

Many experiments have been conducted on both animals and humans, transplanting healthy nerve cells to make up for the lack of dopamine, but it is difficult to study what happens to the transplant.

"We don't know how the new nerve cells behave once they have been transplanted into the brain. Do they connect to the surrounding cells as they should, and can they function normally and produce dopamine as they should? Can we use light to reinforce dopamine production? These are the issues we want to investigate with optogenetics," says Professor Merab Kokaia.

Optogenetics allows scientists to control certain cells in the brain using light, leaving other cells unaffected. In order to do this, the relevant cells are equipped with genes for a special light-sensitive protein. The protein makes the cells react when they are illuminated with light from a thin optic fibre which is also implanted in the brain. The cells can then be "switched on" when they are illuminated.

"If we get signals as a response to light from the host brain, we know that they come from the transplanted cells since they are the only ones to carry the light-sensitive protein. This gives us a much more specific way of studying the brain's reactions than inserting an electrode, which is the current method. With an electrode, we do not know whether the electric signals that are detected come from "new" or "old" brain cells," explains Merab Kokaia.

The work will be conducted on laboratory rats modelling Parkinson's disease. The transplanted cells will be derived from skin from an adult human and will have been "reprogrammed" as nerve cells. Merab Kokaia will be collaborating with neuro-researchers Malin Parmar and Olle Lindvall on the project. The three Lund researchers have received a grant of USD 75 000 from the Michael J. Fox Foundation, started by actor Michael J. Fox and dedicated to Parkinson's research.

The light-sensitive protein is obtained from a bacterium, which uses light to gain energy. Since it is not a human protein, the safety checks will be extra strict if the method is to be used on humans.

"We know that this is long term research. But the methodology is interesting and it will be exciting to see what we can come up with," says Merab Kokaia.

Google Analytics Tips for Small Businesses

Google Analytics visits and revenue reportYou?re a small business and you?ve got a decent website?but you?re not sure how it?s doing. What you need is Google Analytics (GA), but you?re not sure what to make of all the reporting options.

Don?t worry, I can help.

What?s Important in Google Analytics?

For a small business, the most complex reports aren?t going to matter as much as the bread and butter basic reporting features. Focus on what matters to your business. Most likely, this is going to be visits, pages, and referrals.

Visits

Find out your site?s traffic volume by looking into your visits. This report will be important to any small business, but especially those that are growing their brand. The visits report provides insight into your site?s visibility, performance, usability, and pageviews.

Pages

All Pages Report in GAYou need to know which page on your site is driving the most traffic and/or conversions. Using the ?All Pages? report, you can see this information as well as helpful data regarding pageviews, time on page, and bounce rate. This data can be used to evaluate your landing pages as well as determine potential areas for new content.

Referrals

Where are your website?s visitors coming from? Did you know that most small businesses get nearly half their traffic from Social Media. You can see how your referral traffic is coming from in GA.

Referrals are especially important for small businesses as they provide an opportunity for small businesses to reach out and embrace their primary audience: the community.

Providing content that is targeted at your local community is a good way to build traffic, brand awareness, and potential customers. The Referrals report will help you find your most active audience?then it?s up to you to reach out to them!

A Better Way to Monitor Google Analytics

Viewing this data regularly in Google Analytics is important. And since that process would be a lot easier if someone would just hand you the keys to a reporting system that you didn?t have to think about, I have done just that.

Here at Portent, we love small businesses so much, we decided to create a Small Business Dashboard for Google Analytics that you can download for free.
Google Analytics dashboard

Install the dashboard in your Google Analytics profile.

Google Analytics Small Business Dashboard

Let?s go over a couple features of the Small Business Dashboard. First, it includes data for Visits and % New Visits. We chose to provide % New Visits because as a small business, new customers are going to be far more important than visitor retention and returning customers. You want people learning your name and coming into your store?you need new visitors.

Next, we included stats for Social Visits, Referral Visits, and Visits from Mobile Devices. We?ve covered Social and Referrals, but Mobile reporting is also becoming very important, as it accounts for at least 40% of local searches (Remember the last time you looked for a restaurant while driving down the freeway?).

Goal Conversion Rate in GAWe also have a tally for Goal Conversion Rate and a pie chart for Visits by Location. These are both customizable for your needs. Simply click the gear in the top right of these widgets and set them to the data you want to track. For now, Goal Conversion Rate is tracking all goals (you might just want one specific goal tracked) and Visits by Location is set to City (instead of Region if you?re in multiple states). Set these up however you?d like in order to get the most of the Small Business Dashboard.

Keep Handy Face Painting Books and Supplies at a Kids' Party

Leading Paragraph:?

Face painting as an art has evolved and gained huge popularity in the past few years. It has, however, been in existence since time immemorial

Face painting as an art has evolved and gained huge popularity in the past few years. It has, however, been in existence since time immemorial, a fact that we are reminded, often gruesomely, through those apocalyptic or horror films that seem to deal with almost nothing but prehistoric tribes and people that deal with singularly apocalyptic figures. This doesn?t come as too much of a surprise though, considering that there seems to have been a renewed interest in various forms of body art. Naturally, there are tattoo parlours and piercing centres opening up in every corner of the country, and it is tough to get by five people without coming across someone with at least a couple of piercings and sporting tattoos on every visible part of the body.
?
Besides, a lot of people are also taking a lot of interest in doing these things themselves at home, especially face painting, which has led to an abundance of face painting supplies available in specialised shops and even in those establishments that deal with different kinds of body arts. This renews interest in body art has led to a lot of people wishing to learn these techniques by themselves too, which has led to a lot of people investing in courses that teach these various kinds of techniques.
?
Naturally, it can also be seen that centres teaching such courses have also opened up. However, learning at home is also an option, which has led to a lot of people investing in courses right at home. However, one can also learn them without any professional help, especially face painting which is the easiest one to do without anyone else?s help, which has led to a lot of people buying face painting books.
?
Face painting in itself is not at all an easy task, especially if one is attempting it on one?s own face. On the other hand, one would be astonished to see the number of unique designs on faces. One would be even more surprised to know that many of these are actually created not by professionals, but by mere amateurs. This is the beauty of face paint: it can be easily down and doesn?t cause too much of problems at all. The idea is especially great for a kids? party; all kids love to get their faces painted, and you can never run out of ideas while doing a face paint job on them. Just make sure that you have enough face painting supplies so that you don?t run out of them while still with twenty eager kids lined up.
Among children, almost every kind of face painting will find popularity. Therefore, it would never be too much of a problem to come upon ideas to keep things interesting. While cartoon characters are extremely popular, characters from well known kids? stories like Peter Pan and Captain Hook are will also find eager acceptance. Keep handy a couple of face painting books in case you find yourself becoming repetitive.
?
?
Want to try a hand at body art, and looking for face painting supplies http://illusionmagazine.co.uk/ ? We have everything under the sun that you might need to perfect the art, and that includes face painting books http://illusionmagazine.co.uk/ ?as well to guide you in the right direction.

Sprint Q3 2012 Misses, Down $.26/Share On Revenues Of $7.3B, Reports 1.5M iPhones Sold

sprintblackSprint, newly acquired by Japanese SoftBank for $20.1 billion earlier this month, has just announced earnings results for the third quarter, perhaps showing just how fortunate this acquisition will be for the company. For the period ending September 30, the company reported negative EPS of $.26 on revenues of $7.3 billion, an increase of nearly 6 percent year-over-year. That’s down from revenues of $8.8 billion in Q2 2012. The company also reported an operating loss of $231 million. Sprint missed Wall Street expectations, as analysts estimated that Sprint would lose $.44 per share with revenues of $8.8 billion. As always the iPhone plays a central role in Sprint’s story, and this quarter the company says it’s activated 1.5 million iPhones. That’s flat from?1.5 million last quarter, and 40 percent of that represents new customers. Post-paid subscriber base grew with net additions of 410,000. Verizon and AT&T both just reported their third quarter numbers, with both selling a whopping 3.1 million and 4.7 million respectively. Obviously, Sprint can’t quite match these numbers just yet but the increase in post-paid subscribers compared to the same quarter last year is true evidence that the plan is working. An infusion from Japanese SoftBank would go a long ways, considering both companies have so much in common (the iPhone, LTE frequencies, a bronze medal or two). Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) today reported wireless service revenues of nearly $7.3 billion during the quarter, an increase of nearly 6 percent year-over-year. Wireless service revenues for the Sprint platform grew 14 percent year-over-year driven by postpaid ARPU growth of $3.01 and continued subscriber growth. The company reported a net loss of $767 million and a diluted net loss of $.26 per share for the third quarter of 2012 as compared to a net loss of $301 million and a diluted net loss of $.10 per share in the third quarter of 2011. Sprint?s third quarter 2012 results include accelerated depreciation of $397 million, or negative $.13 per share (pre-tax), primarily related to Network Vision, including the expected shutdown of the Nextel platform. The Sprint platform postpaid subscriber base grew for the tenth consecutive quarter, with net additions of 410,000 driven by a postpaid Nextel recapture rate of 59 percent and best ever third quarter churn. Sprint recorded approximately 1.5 million iPhone? sales in the third quarter with 40 percent representing new customers. The company also surpassed 1
