Report an error
MJHL commissioner Kim Davis has launched an investigation after Dauphin Kings head coach Marlin Murray went ballistic Thursday night during a playoff game at Winnipeg's St. James Civic Centre.
The incident was captured on video by at least two people and is attracting quite a few views on YouTube. Murray threw sticks, water bottles and what appeared to be medical supplies at referees Brett Montsion and Ryan Galley during a stoppage in play. Murray hit one of the referees in the leg with a stick he threw from the bench.
The Kings lost the game 5-1 to the Winnipeg Saints and now trail the best-of-seven Sher-Wood Division semifinal 3-1 despite finishing with the MJHL's second-best regular season record.
Game 5 goes Saturday night in Dauphin.
Davis was at Thursday's game and witnessed the ugly scene firsthand, but he couldn't comment on the incident since he is the one investigating it.
"Just like any other misbehaviours by players or coaches, we review the game sheet and the report from the officials and then investigate further if we need to, look at video if we need to and then look at the guidelines that we have," Davis said. "That's what I've started."
The incident appears to have occurred with 5:55 left in the third period of the penalty-filled game. The Kings were given a match penalty and a gross misconduct at that time.
The Saints scored four of their five goals on the power play and had 16 opportunities with the man advantage overall. Dauphin had eight power play chances in the game but failed to score on any of them.
Kings president Darren Russell refuted rumours Murray had been fired, and he said the team's board of directors was gathering information and wouldn't rush to judgment regarding the incident.
"I won't try to defend what happened, but I wouldn't say that it was unprovoked or without cause," Russell said. "Was the reaction proper? I don't know that it was, but there's probably more to it than what the people are going to see in a one-minute video that they get online.
"... We're under pressure at a lot of levels right now. Our board is, and our hockey club is down 3-1 in a series as well. We need to ensure that we react to all these pressures properly."
Murray, who is also the team's general manager, has been one of the league's most successful coaches in recent years, guiding the Kings to the 2010 RBC Cup final. He was fiery as a player with the Brandon University Bobcats, and he's the same way as a coach.
"He's an emotional guy. He's an emotional coach," Russell said. "He has a way to bring the emotions out in his players as well. He's a very vibrant person.
"... I won't defend it or throw Marlin under the bus over it. What's happened has happened, and we'll deal with it as time goes by."
